The Founder

Carmel Nair is an arts and culture development practitioner, born and living in South Africa. Her work spans 35 years in the African creative and development sectors working with artists and arts & organisations across diverse disciplines, including: African oral tradition, education and literature, theatre, music, musical theatre, craft, film production and distribution and more recently digital media. She has worked with various local and international organisations to deliver organisational and creative excellence both locally and internationally. 


Since the 1990’s, Carmel has made integral contributions to the establishment of pioneering efforts within the art scene in Southern Africa: Team leader of South Africa’s participation in the World Expo in Shanghai, China (2010); Cultural Programmes Manager of the Newtown Cultural Precinct (2005 – 2008); Project Director “Joburg New Year’s Eve Carnival” (2004 – 2008}; Coordinator first South African Independent Film Producers Organisation (1999); One of the founding members and coordinator of the first South African Film and Television Market, Sithengi (1997 – 1999).


Carmel is a registered member of the Southern Africa Institute of Fundraising (Member #: WC2029R25).

Fundraising and Project Management

Human Rights Campaign for the rights of gold mineworkers who contracted Tuberculosis and Silicosis while working on South African gold mines to receive just, fair and speedy compensation.

Non-profit organisation offering music education in a safe, nurturing environment, Kronendal Music Academy supports the physical, mental and emotional well-being of children between the ages of 8 – 18 and beyond

Initiative to launch a Pan-African Film Festival and Market in Addis Ababa.

Fundraising and Project Management

The largest resource for information and exchange in and for the African music sector. Fundraised and Project Managed various projects including “African Instrument Building”.

Iconic artist the late Mbongeni Ngema well-known for the first South African musical “Sarafina” on Broadway.  Project Managed the stage show “The Zulu” and concert “Siyagiya” and other projects in development e.g. “Mandela – The Musical”.

Iconic artist Dr. Gcina Mhlophe, a versatile and multi-talented artist who has left an indelible mark on the literary and performance arts in South Africa and beyond. From her early childhood. Project Managed and fundraised for various projects including “Nozincwadi Mother of Books.”

The Vocal Museum was founded by artist Masello Motana.  It is an artist-led archival and linguistic practice which marries linguistic and performative practice to contextualize, preserve and interpret community histories and heritage.
